Conductor : 16 AWG – 600 kcmil solid or stranded round, tinned or bare copper.

Insulation : Extruded SR,

Applications

According to the UL registry, UL 3640 is defined as a “Single Conductor with Extruded Insulation” under appliance wiring standards.
Typical ratings given by manufacturers for UL 3640 wire: 150 °C (some up to 180 °C) and 1100 V AC.
Insulation is silicone rubber (SR), conductor copper (tinned or bare), with gauge ranges covering a large span (from relatively small to heavy gauge 600 kcmil) depending on application. 

Recommended Applications

  • Internal wiring of appliances and equipment where high temperature resistance is required (e.g., ovens, heaters, industrial heating equipment)

  • Wiring for power supplies, transformers, inverters, and similar electrical equipment where higher voltage and temperature rating is needed

  • Silicone‑insulated internal wiring in lighting fixtures, lighting modules, and high‑temperature lighting equipment

  • Wiring inside industrial machinery or electronic equipment operating under high temperature, high stress, or chemically demanding environments (oil, chemical exposure, vibration, etc.)

  • Internal wiring of photovoltaic (PV) inverters, energy‑storage systems (ESS), or other renewable‑energy equipment where robust insulation and higher voltage handling are required

  • Wiring in applications requiring robust flame resistance and high safety margins (silicone insulation, high‑temperature rating, flame test: FT2 / VW‑1)

Because of its silicone insulation and high‑temperature / high‑voltage rating, UL 3640 is suited for more demanding internal wiring compared with standard hook‑up wires.

Limitations

  • Intended for internal wiring (inside appliances, equipment, enclosures) — not necessarily for direct burial, permanent outdoor use, or extreme external mechanical stress (unless additional protective jacket/braid is used). Some manufacturer datasheets mention insulation plus optional glass‑fibre braid/jacket for enhanced mechanical protection.
